As the term “Baby Botox” is becoming more popular, one of the most common questions I get from people in the 20s and 30s is when should I begin Botox?
To answer this question, let’s take it back a second and discuss the 2 different types of wrinkles and what causes them. First, you have dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles only appear with facial expressions and go away when your face is at rest. Static wrinkles are already etched into your skin and are always there when your face is at rest. These are caused by repeated muscle movements from facial expressions over our lifetime.
We don’t like static wrinkles.
This means your skin is permanently creased and it will be more difficult to smooth it out. BUT – there’s hope…
Because wrinkles are caused by muscle movement, the goal is to reduce the muscle movement before your skin starts to crease permanently. Smiling, frowning, winking, kissing – all weaken your skin over time causing wrinkles. The idea behind “Preventative Botox” or “Baby Botox” is to prevent these permanent lines from forming to keep your skin looking smooth and youthful.
SO - THE NEXT QUESTION IS, WHEN IS A GOOD TIME TO START PREVENTATIVE BOTOX?
As with all areas of aesthetics, this decision is highly personalized. However, in a person’s late 20s is usually a good time to consider it. I was late to the game and did not start preventative Botox in my 20s and now that I am in my 40s, I feel like I am playing catch up big time! Like me, many women start noticing things like make-up gathering into fine lines and wrinkles in their 30s and more pronounced wrinkles in pictures in their 40s.
Once you have etched lines, it is not preventative anymore – it’s a full on treatment!
If you don’t treat static lines right away, they get deeper. At this point, neurotoxin may reduce muscle movement and soften the lines, but etched lines will not completely go away. If that is the case, a combination of treatments such as lasers and microneedling and collagen boosting treatments are ne
cessary to slowly smooth the skin.
When in doubt, schedule a consultation to discuss your aesthetic goals and create an anti-aging treatment plan with a timeline. This will give you a baseline of your skin health now, things to look out for as you age, and both preventative and therapeutic options to maintain healthy and youthful looking skin at any age.
